Well, … Well, Xenawarriorcat, I’ve been enjoying my Moka experience a lot more since using a burr grinder & fresh roasted beans. I haven’t used my espresso machine in 4 days except for hot water & to steam milk. Although, the Breville makes a far more intense cup w/crema I must say I don’t miss the cleanup & maintenance that using an espresso machine requires. Thanks for your vid.Without it my Moka express 6 pot would still be unused.
Panadev…you’re … Panadev…you’re correct. Crema isn’t what the moka pot is all about. It’s the brew. It takes practice, patience & skill. It’s a science & an art. Most coffee enthusiasts don’t know it but they’re like organic chemists. They use specialized equipment, to carefully follow proceedures, to control temperatures, measurements, proportions, reaction rates, densities, acidity, fluid dynamics, etc.. One miscue means a bitter brew. The perfect cup of joe is a matter of taste but it’s all science.
BTW, my $2 Goodwill … BTW, my $2 Goodwill Toastmaster popcorn popper/coffee roaster just blows cool air now so I had to buy a new popper. Actually, I bought 3. One $30 for actual popcorn and the other two $10 Kitchen Gourmets I found at Walgreens, just for coffee roasting (they are terrible for popping corn but great for coffee–even better than my Toastmaster which I use just for cooling down the beans now) . The pc popper roasts 4 ounces at a time in about 6 1/2 mins or a little longer for a darker bean.

It needs a good cleaning–which means I’ll have to break it in all over again, but that’s half the fun right? Tues. night I roasted a pound of beans. E. Yirgacheffe, C. Supremo, and some S. Mandheling. 2 1/2 days degassing should be plenty. This blend should make a great pot of Moka tomorrow!

I’m relatively new to REAL espresso so I’m still learning (btw REAL espresso needs a minimum of 9 BARS or pressure…moka pots only provide 1.5 BARS of pressure). I’m learning by asking questions like you & visiting websites like coffeegeeks (.com). They’re the real experts. No shortage of knowledge, opinions & advice there.
The Brikka is more … The Brikka is more expensive but it produces more crema. I actually own the 6 cup moka express and got pretty good at making quick espresso-like brews without burning the grounds but my crema was always too blonde and thin. Now I exclusively use my Breville 800 but I sometimes miss my moka… And now that I use a good burr grinder I might dust off the cobwebs and give it a go again just to see if the grind helps to improve crema.

Glad to help. I … Glad to help. I started roasting in my oven but the smoke alarm kept going off. lol. I roast on the back porch with a popcorn popper. 1 min after first crack & they’re done. You can grind them about 8 hours later for drip coffee but I wait at least 3 days for espresso grinds. The CO2 causes too much crema–more like heavy foam. Visit the Ineedcoffee (.com) for great articles look for a popper article by Michael Allen Smith. & how to roast in wocs, fry pans & chaff collection, etc.. Great site.
You can roast your … You can roast your own using green beans purchased from many websites or order pre-roasted in small batches from various websites. They roast & sell blends on demand to your taste. Some sell beginner roasting kits. Only buy what you can use in one weeks time. Coffee oils go rancid (skunky) & stale quickly once exposed to air. It can get expensive quick with S&H but coffee geeks roast their own blends in ovens, tumble roasters or even popcorn air-poppers. Google home coffee roasting supplies.
Whatever you do you … Whatever you do you need to start with a first class burr grinder. As far as excellent mokapots ($12 and up) vs. excellent espresso machines ($800 and up) you’ll have to decide. Mokapots make excellent brew when handled properly, though. Not espresso, but excellent.
Many burr grinders … Many burr grinders do a fine job for moka; Mazzer is VERY pricey and not at all a must-have for excellent moka. Consider Maestro, Capresso, Cuisinart and Kitchen-Aid burr mills as very suitable. Or, for free, just have your coffee ground at a coffeehouse or grocery store with a good grinder.

Nah…. not really. :^)
Wipe grounds from the rim and threads carefully after filling the basket and tighten the pots very snugly (no pressure leaks, please), then:
1) fresh roast (2-15-days old) only;
2) burr-grind med/fine;
3) slightly overfill basket and tap/tamp gently to insure even compaction;
4) slow brew – 45-60 seconds of coffee flow.
The brew should be happening just at the edge of the pressure valve blowing – like sliding down a razor blade, done right.
